What should be included in a technical resume?


Here are some of the elements that must be included in any technical resume:

An eye-catching header

The header of the resume should contain basic information about yourself. This will include your name, address, phone number, email address, personal website, and LinkedIn account. Technical resumes can also include a link to a code repository if you have one. This allows your potential employer to take a closer look at your work. Close attention should be paid to the design of your header. It must be professional and easy-to-read.

Qualifications summary

The qualifications summary is a short section that highlights your core competencies. This section is designed to show the employer or recruiter what you are great at. It combines information from your work history, qualifications, and personal attributes to give them a sense of what you are capable of.

The goal of your qualifications summary is to grab the reader's attention immediately and make them interested in the rest of the resume. For technical resumes, this section can either be written as 1-2 paragraphs with bullet points or just bullet points. Here is a short example of a qualifications summary:

If you are going for a highly technical position, you should include a Skills section. This helps a prospective employer to quickly determine if you have the right technical background for the role. It can be beneficial to list related skills on the same line, for example:

Professional experience

Don't just list the technical skills you used in each position — highlight real achievements that helped your employer. For example, most employers won't be impressed by the claim that you “Used MySQL on a daily basis”. However, they will love it if you “Improved website database performance by 45%, leading to a 10% increase in sales”.

Your Professional Experience should list each position sequentially from the most recent to the least recent. Include the title of the position, the employer, and the dates you held the job. Beneath each job, list your key responsibilities and accomplishments. For example:
