Introduce yourself

Use a short introductory paragraph to set the correct tone, giving details of your qualities which will make you a perfect fit for the police force. Your potential employer will be looking for someone who has integrity, a high degree of responsibility, the ability to be calm under pressure, who has good judgement and who adheres to correct procedures.

Tailor your resume to the force you are applying to

Each police force will have its own individual entry requirements. So, make sure you take note of these and address each point in your resume. Also, bear in mind that an inner city police force may well be looking for different skills and characteristics to a smaller force in the countryside.

Your experience

If you are applying for your first role in law enforcement, it may seem impossible to include relevant experience. However, think about any instances when you have demonstrated responsibility, leadership and service. Have you carried out charity work, for example, which could impress your prospective employer? Or do you take part in competitive sports? This will demonstrate your fitness, stamina and discipline.

For those hoping to take a step up in their career, ensure you document any areas of expertise. Do you have experience in working closely with your local community? Do you specialise in child protection? Have you managed security and protection at large-scale events such as sports matches or concerts?

As well as bullet pointing those areas in which you specialise or excel, give specific examples. Are there specific cases or incidents you have been involved in which have led directly to arrests, a reduction in crime or improved safety for the public? Your employer will be keen that you do the same in your new role. Also, listing examples on your resume will give you discussion points if you are successful in getting to the interview stage.

Education

Each police force tends to have different minimum entry requirements so make sure you enquire with the force you are hoping to join before writing your resume. While most police forces require high school qualifications as a minimum, degree courses are also looked on very favourably and could gain you fast-track entry onto leadership courses or into management roles.

Ensure you also include any courses you have completed before and during your time in law enforcement, such as first aid or leadership training.

Soft skills

As well as directly measurable educational qualifications, soft skills are just as important in the police force, where the way you deal with suspects or the public could make all the difference to the outcome of a difficult situation. Detail the skills which could help you to stay in control even in the most volatile of scenarios. Police officers need to have superb communication skills, both verbally and in written form. Your notes need to be perfectly accurate. They may form the basis of a court case in the future and could make the difference between a suspect being convicted or acquitted.

You will also need to be adept at multi-tasking, supremely organised, tactful, considerate, a good reader of human behaviour, observational and analytical. Also, point out your ability to work on your own initiative to solve problems while still being a great team player.

Career progression

It is a standard interview question; where do you see yourself in five or ten years’ time? And, there’s also nothing wrong with noting on your resume that you have ambitions to progress within the police force. That way, your employer will be able to see that you are looking at a career in the police as a serious, long-term prospect. Take a look at what roles could be available in the future at your chosen force and include ambitions to join counter-terrorism, anti-fraud or dog-handling activities if that is your ultimate aim. Any potential employer will appreciate that you have goals you would like to work towards.
