How to Write a Hospitality Resume


Introduce yourself

In the hospitality industry, perhaps more so than any other, your personality can be a huge asset. Introduce yourself within the first few lines of your resume in a way which immediately shows how engaging and personable you are. You will need to emphasize your communication skills, commitment and enthusiasm. Also, if you have qualifications and accreditations which are directly relevant to the hospitality industry, list these in your introduction to capture the attention of your potential employer from the outset.

Qualifications

The hospitality industry sometimes has a very unfair reputation for being one where qualifications are rare. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Those working in the hospitality industry have often undertaken specialist hospitality and tourism college or degree courses, as well as on-the-job training. While it’s certainly possible to get your first job in hospitality without formal qualifications, those who do have relevant qualifications can be fast-tracked into managerial positions or earn a higher salary.

List any qualifications you have which are directly relevant. But, also think about others you have which may be impressive to an employer. Have you, for example, undertaken any business or managerial courses? Other qualifications which are an advantage in the hospitality industry are those surrounding food hygiene, first aid, time management, health and safety, and languages.

Education

Even if your educational achievements are not directly within the hospitality industry, think about the other experiences you have gained during your time at school, college or university. Have you demonstrated leadership skills during extra-curricular activities for example? Did you help to run school or college events? Did you volunteer at a summer camp? Including this sort of detail alongside your more formal qualifications will demonstrate you have the type of personality needed to work in the hospitality industry.

Experience

Make sure that you list a number of bullet points for each position rather than just noting which hotel or restaurant you worked for along with the dates you were employed. Use numbers to bring your resume to life. How many rooms did the hotel you worked at have? Were you responsible for maintaining a 97 per cent customer satisfaction rating? Did your responsibilities include balancing a budget of a certain amount each day? By being specific about these figures, you will give a hiring manager a much better idea about the level of responsibility you held.

Also note any management experience if you are looking to move on in your chosen career path. Even if you weren’t employed as a supervisor or a manager, telling a prospective employer about training new members of staff or when you stepped in to cover during weekends, holidays or sickness can show you are ready for that next level of responsibility.

Soft skills

The old adage about people buying from people is never more true than in the hospitality industry. You will need to demonstrate a host of skills on your resume including exceptional communication abilities. Your employer will also be looking for someone who can stay calm under pressure, who is adept at multi-tasking, who is a great problem solver and who is skilled at conflict resolution. Hospitality workers are needed to work unsociable hours given that the industry is 24/7. Someone will always be needed on the front desk, or to provide room service, for example, so emphasising your flexibility will show an employer than you are prepared for this.

Technical skills

Customer service isn’t all about service with a smile, although that is undoubtedly important. You will also need to be familiar with technical systems in order to take bookings and to enable customers to make point of sale transactions. Social media familiarity and experience will also be relevant as many customers now choose to communicate through this medium.
